“I don’t like spinach.” Brent used the same pouty voice he had when we were kids and Mom said he had to eat his broccoli if he wanted to watch his favorite show before bed.

I stopped chopping and glared at him over my shoulder. “You like spinach just fine.”

He leaned back against my counter and crossed his arms over his chest. “I’m well into my thirties. Pretty sure I’d know if I liked a specific food or not.”

I turned toward him. “But you literally can’t taste it. It’s a bonus vegetable without the pain and suffering.”

“Can you put the knife down when you talk with your hands?” He held his own up in surrender.

“Not until you start saying nice things about spinach.”

“Fine, fine. I love spinach more than Popeye.” He retreated to the fridge. “Beer?”

“Sure.” When I finished cutting the spinach into tiny pieces—because, yes, I was adding spinach to our pasta sauce—I picked up the bottle of my favorite stout and tapped the base against Brent’s.

It was the second time I’d had him over for dinner that week, and it was only Tuesday. Being able to see him whenever I wanted was better than I’d ever imagined. Back in Milwaukee, I hadn’t let myself miss that prospect too much because it’d made me sad. I’d convinced myself that flying out to visit each other once or twice a year with our weekly video chats was enough to sustain our close bond. I’d been back in Chinook Falls less than a month, and we were closer than ever.

While the sauce simmered, we settled in the living room and chatted about nothing important.

“Knock, knock.” Ronnie pushed the front door open and dropped her bag on a nearby stack of boxes. “My evening server arrived an hour late. Sorry.”

“Beer’s in the fridge, and sauce is cooking,” I said.

Ronnie grabbed herself a drink then sat next to me on the couch. Ronnie and Brent chatted for a few minutes about some city council scandal that went right over my head. Ronnie had always felt more like a sister than a friend, and I knew Brent felt the same. With Ronnie being an only child and her parents having moved to Louisiana years back to take care of their parents, I’d appreciated knowing Brent and Ronnie had kept an eye on each other while I lived half a country away. It was kind of weird to watch them interact as friends with things to talk about that had nothing to do with me. Adult things. Local things. When we were younger, Ronnie and I had been like Brent’s annoying siblings, and it had almost been impossible to get him to hang out with us. Adulting had caused a lot of changes.

“What’s with the books?” Brent gestured with his beer bottle toward the stack of Lane’s books on one of my still-packed boxes.

Out of habit, my stomach twisted slightly at the anticipation of disappointing my brother. “I visited Angela’s store this afternoon to support her.”

Brent didn’t look amused.
